My GGrandfather pte John stewart died in southern Iraq and is buried there he died in 1916. I am trying to find where he is buried and what regiment he was in.
I am also trying to find the link between him and my grandmother Ester byers Stewart born in 1906. I also know his name appears on the war memorial in kings park Dalkeith Midlothian Scotland
any help for finding our lost soldier Ian Anderson

I've 2 candidates both called John Stewart, both privates in the Black Watch 2nd Battalion, both died in the Perian Gulf, one on 22/6/1916 and one on 18/6/1916. One was from Edinburgh and one from Crieff, Perthshire.

I know about the Persian Gulf thanks anders, but like Jack cannot understand why you asked for his regiment and burial details which you already appear to have.

still not 100% sure that he is the one I am looking for, when my gran was alive no one was ever to talk about him bringing back her bad memories of him. I turn up once at her house when I was teenager with a moustache and all she to me was the next time I come that will be off, my dad said because of her father

I think the link between your great great grandfather John Stewart died 1916 and your great grandmother Est(h)er Byers Stewart born 1906 i that he was her father and she was his daughter,

1. Buy a copy of your grandmother's birth certificate which will tell you her father's name.
2. Buy a copy of your great-grandfathers birth certificate.
3. Problem solved.

Scottish birth certificates also contain the marriage details of the parents and so you'll get two for the price of one.

Sorry I've looked all through the 188 John Stewarts killed in the Great War in 1916 and none of them give Dalkeith as their birth place.

On the 1901 Scottish census there are only 4 John Stewarts that were born in Dalkeith and would be old enough to serve in WW1. and only 2 that were still living in their birth town in 1901.
One is born 1881 son of adam and elizabeth and the other born 1886 son of william and isabella.

there is one born 1894 but he's not old enough to have fathered your great grandmother born 1906, these other 2 certainly are. well the second one is only ust old enough.

Can't make this data agree to any of the CWGC data, however. John Stewart would have been 32/33 in 1916 - rather older than most soldiers in WWI, especially as a coal miner which I would have thought might have been a reserved occupation.
