Another thought crossed the mind - what if Edward died before Rosetta? If so, the death certificate might describe her as 'widow of Edward etc' [in which case he wouldn't have been the informant of course] and the informant might have been Nellie.
I would guess that Edward wasn't into babies because the children he had with him in Port Talbot were all of an age where they could be expected to feed and dress themselves and wipe their own noses and the other end. Rosetta had the babies back in Cheltenham.
The orphanage bit was a little surprising - I would expect either his siblings or Rosetta's siblings to have taken in their nieces and nephews.

Lancelot Wakefield was my father in law, he always said he did not know what happened to his father. Edward was in Wales in 1912 and present when Raymond died that year. he was living with 4 of the children with his mother in law Emily Gale and her second husband Frank. Edward and Hubert (born1903) seem to have disappered, although Hubert was named as next of kin when Walter enlisted in the army in about 1920 , nothing since. Rosetta also had 4 children with her when she died, none seem to have been taken in by family as Lance was fostered by a family in Shurdington.
Reg Wakefield was the son of Nellie Wakefield and he took the name of Sansome (not sure if Nellie's husband adopted him). Lancelot and Reg were quite close before the war.
