As you my gather from my user name I've got Irish connections and this old boy was very proud that he'd served in what he called the "Proper IRA" and that he had been wounded during the Easter Rising and he was quite scathing in his opinion of some of the modern day IRA, as he said in his day did some things he wasn't too proud off but at least they'd stood up and faced the army like proper soldiers.
I should preface this answer with:
My father was a British soldier and I was born in Holywood.
I remember the bombing campaigns on the British mainland in the 70's and the fact that it was no longer safe for a soldier to wear his uniform outside the barracks.
Having said that, the Irish Republican Army were once a legitimate fighting force and the British did treat them like s$%t.
