Medea was a myth that inspired a play by Eupripides - a greek tragedian.
THe basic plot follows the title character (Medea) and her 'husband' Jason (Jason from The Argonaughts). After Jason's adventure, Medea and himself went to Corinth where they had 2 children. Due to Medea's ethnic origins it was not technically seen as a marriage and so Jason decided (apparently) for the best of his children, that he would marry the King of Corinths (Creon) daighter: Glauci.
Medea understandably got jealous and, to cut a long story short, murdered Creon and Glauce and killed her 2 children as the ultimate act of vengeance for Jason's betrayal. Weird no?
