How many more tens of thousands of people died along the way; how far Russia drove into Europe, and so on. Before D-Day the Allies had already got as far into Europe in the East as the borders of omdern-day Poland, and in the South as far as Rome, and the war in Asia was turning the way of the Allies too. D-Day was not essential to win the war, although it helped a lot.
