When Was A Property Built
i have heard this can be done via land registry for a fee but can I find out for free when a specific property or housing estate was built, tia

The building style will give you a rough idea (e.g. Victorian, inter-war, 1950s, 1970s etc.) then go to your nearest library that has a 'local studies' section - most importantly find out if it has local large-scale maps (1:10000 or better). These show individual buildings and will probably be dated. If it is a good source there will be several maps of differing dates so you could find the latest map that doesn't show your property and the earliest map that does and you then have a time frame for the date of your property.
(by the way if you lived in my road it would be a nightmare; all the properties are different ages as the road was developed piecemeal between 1890 and 1960, and the post box was removed 30 years ago)
