Riding House Establishment
Always thought my great grandfather was in the Royal Horse Artillery (the RHA), but recently found a record saying he was in the Riding House Establishment, which seems to be a part of the Royal Artillery.

My late father joined the Royal Artillery straight from his orphanage....he used to tell us that went into the local town one day, signed up at a recruiting stand in the market and never went back to the orphanage. This would have been in 1934/5 He told us he went into J Troop, which sounds like the Riding House, where he learned to ride and care for horses. Riders for the Royal Horse Artillery Guns were drawn from J Troop but had to be lightly built and under a certain weight. My Dad wasn't tall but he was chunky (rugby player) and as he grew, he went over the weight and transferred into the Royal Artillery where he made CSM. His early childhood and time in the orphanage were not happy and he would only rarely speak about it.
