William III invaded England in 1688. He was welcomed by collaborators and duly took the throne while James II (one of whose daughters had married William) fled abroad.
I like this bit - " the other boat returned without attempting an attack on the northern fort, after the sailors claimed to have been frightened away by a noise"
not foreign
1685 Monmouth was son of A king
1688 william of orange's landing Brixham was by invitation
1715 and 45 - Bony Prince Charlie was a stuart and doesnt count
and THAT dear reader ( bizarre to some of the average double digiter ABers ) why the Normany invasion was er Normandy landings - even at the time ( debarquements) er 1944 that is !
It isn't true
The Dutch invaded in the 17th century,
The only reason it wasn't like 1066 is that there were enough of their supporters already in the country.
But had they been properly resisted they would have fought a war of conquest.
///william of orange's landing Brixham was by invitation///
by the 5Cs, PP. Just as well there was no Answerbank on which true-born Englishmen could excoriate them.
I don't think the fact that the Stuarts were (ex-)royals makes any difference. The Kaiser was Victoria's grandson, as the Old Pretender was Charles I's grandson. The only point of distinction was that the Kaiser was descended though a female and the OP through a male - and we mustn't be sexist about this.
TBF even 1066 wasn't a proper invasion. After the death of Edward the confessor, Harold Godwinson was appointed by the Witangemot because there was not an obvious heir. William of Normandy disputed that with some validity and he and a Norman Army invaded and took the throne.
The Medway thing is different.
Andrew Marr explains it well:
"The British in general do not make much of this (1688) invasion. Even quite well educated people believe that England has not been invaded since 1066. The impression has been left that William was more or less invited in, to sort out some constitutional issues. This was not so. "
ich "For small nations that have punched above their weight, the Dutch must take some beating." - Err no we are the ultimate small nation punching above our weight, the British Empire is the largest in history, almost double the size of the next largest. The Roman empire for example is 26th. The Dutch empire is 70th in the list:

I now welcome the 5C knockers.
