Which service suffered the greatest number of human casualties - royal or merchant? Various web resources give loads of info, but can't find a definitive answer to this!

in case anyone is away looking for an answer (!), I found it - merchant navy more ships, royal more men.

And as an aside, the day the merchant seaman's ship was sunk, his pay would stop until he made it back to the U.K. and got on another ship. So they could be sitting in a lifeboat waiting to be rescued and not getting a penny. Very unfair.

and they got spat on waiting for a bus to take them home.. cos they were of servicable age and out of uniform.

what is the proof ? i have no need to doubt you but finding out the truth seems a pretty hard task to me so i need help just tracing one matelot
