He was a Swiss freedom fighter against the Austrians, who occupied his homeland at that time. He was known for his archery skills and it is said that the Austrians forced him, for refusing to swear loyalty to Austria, to shoot an apple off the top of his son's head. He did this, without harming his son, and then shot the Austrian ruler.
