They existed only in art, but were an important symbol, and today the image of the mediaeval knight slaying the dragon has become commonplace. In mediaeval times, dragons in Europe were often a symbol of evil, taken from the Bible. Paintings would show St George and other heroes dressed in knights' armour fighting the fearsome beast, often rescuing a lady in white, who would represent goodness and purity. But not all dragons were depicted as evil. The red Welsh dragon, for example, is a symbol of protection and nationhood. And to this day the Chinese Dragon represents the link between Heaven and Earth.
