He had a son, Manfred Rommel, who later became the Mayor of Stuttgart. Manfred has given a graphic account on film of the day heis father was taken away by the Gestapo and made to commit suicide.
Rommel also had a daughter, the result of an affair with Walburga Stemmer, a fruit-seller living in Weingarten, his garrison town. Gertrude was born in 1913. Rommel wanted to marry Walburga, but family pressure forced him not to.
