Since way back when, the Indians (or whatever they're called now) used to grow maize.
and potatoes
Not potatoes... they originated nearly 6,000 years ago in the Andean Mountains of South America in present day Peru and/or Bolivia. and were never cultivated in the proto U.S. until reintroduced from Europe... from whence they had been exported by the Spanish and Portuguese Conquistadores...

Even maize or corn’s origin is believed to have been in the Mexican plateau or the highlands of Guatemala. Fossil pollen grains of corn have been found in drill cores of lake sediment beneath Mexico City. These sediments could be 80,000 years old or more. (Source: "A History of Corn")

The cultivation of this crop moved northwesterly to the present day Arizona and New Mexico plateaus probably nearly 10,000 years ago...
By the first sucessful farmer -he was outstanding in his field at the time.

Squash seeds from varieties that do not occur naturally, but have been developed by cultivation, have been found on archaeological sites in the US. They have been dated to 10,000 years ago.
