I have an Edwardian house that has rather nice shaped brick cills, at least they would be if the previous occupant had not painted them black.

So two questions, anyone got any ideas on how to get it off (Most is off with peeling/scraper and jetwash)

Secondly, what should I do with them? I seem to recall from my youth a red sort of polish/varnish was used but I can't find anything.

A pressure washer with a sandblasting attachment would remove the paint, but you'd have to protect the window frames while you're doing it.

Otherwise, several coats of paintstripper or a blowlamp.
Once they're cleaned up, they shouldn't need any further treatment.
