The paint on the ceiling in the utility room developed a crack and when I removed some of the paint there are these 'fungi'? underneath.

The ulility room is directly under the ensuite. I suspect we have a leak somewhere. Can anyone identify what these growths are, please. They're very small so haven't come out terribly well.

I have to admit that I was standing at the top of a two-step kitchen ladder. I do have a proper step ladder but I couldn't be bothered to go and lug it out of the garage.

So, shall I take as much paint off as possible and just leave it to see if it dries out?
Take of as much loose/flaky paint as you can Tills then give it a good sanding down. Personally I would give the sanded down area a thin coat of paint before repainting the whole area.

I hate it when things go wrong!

I'll wait and see what happens with the mushrooms.

There no smell or anything.
If you've got mushrooms growing Tills, bring some up to Stoke with you next week, I'll get us some oatcakes to put them on along with some bacon and cheese :-)
Question Author
This is what it looks like from just standing on the floor. It doesn't look too bad does it?

No mushrooms on my oatcakes, Nails. Just bacon and cheese, thank you.
You're wish is my command Tills :-)
Look forward to meeting you next week.
Question Author
Never mind all that, Nails, I'm concerned about my ceiling. (but I'll look forward to the oatcakes. I've run out here. need to stock up.)

Melv, have you anything to add to this, as a professional decorator??
Tilly, just to cheer you up, this pizza is what we found growing betweenthe wall and the side of a cabinet (ruler helpfully included). It was wet rot and cost thousands to hack out the wall, inject with an anti-pizza solution and replaaster. So you are very lucky

pffft... no it wasn't, it was dry rot.
Idealy you should be addressing the cause of the problem before you think of decorating over the damaged ceiling.
Just a word of warning before you start sanding mould or spores .. my neighbour removed some loose wallpaper with a scraper. Whatever mould/spores were growing between the layers of wallpaper put him in hospital with breathing difficulties for quite a few weeks. Wear a good mask if you intend scraping it...

Am I, Jno? I might have to have the ensuite ripped out and the ceiling taken down.

Time will tell.

I wouldn't order that pizza in my local Italian. It looks a bit chewy!
Question Author
Thanks, alava. I am NOT going to be doing anything. My local, friendly decorator will be. ;-)
if The Builder says you're okay, that's good enough for me. Most builders would tell you you need a new bathroom put in.
Question Author
It is such a shame that The Builder is so far away!
//Melv, have you anything to add to this, as a professional decorator??//
Nothing much to add, tilly, other than washing it down with a bleach solution to kill the fugal spores. Your decorator should be able to sort it out.
Question Author
Thank you, Melv.
Thanks Tilly. I wish I were a bit nearer too ;o)

Scrape off everything that will easily come off, then a sealer/stain blocker, then re-paint.
Question Author
Thanks again, Mr B. (Happy birthday, by the way)

I have wiped off the fungusy bits with bleach and have applied some sealant to the en suite shower base. I'm going to leave the ceiling as it is for a couple of weeks, to see if any more staining or fungus appears. Then, I will give the decorator a call.
