Question it's parentage?... Actually, a chain, about 18 inches long with links that measure about 1/8 to 1/4 inch thick and beat the piece randomly to cause dents. A finish can be applied that consists of a blackening or darkening agent that is them wiped off to "shadow" the dents you've just applied. A finishing stain of alighter shade will complete the job... Best of luck!
Or simply do a search on Google under 'distressing furniture' to get all sorts of tips.
You can paint it and rub down with steel wool particularly edges.

Hi dogbody13, I'm painting kitchen units doors which are wood, should I use proper kitchen cupboard paint and then wire wool it ?
what do you want tatty furniture for?
where do you want to stop at, may as well get a few orange boxes!
