leaking bath taps

i have a leak fromm under the base of my bath taps,the problem is the hole in th top of my bath is close to 40 mm,but the shank to the bath tap only covers by a few mm,is there a way i can make the hole smaller in the top of my bath or any other ideas,thanks

Short of taking the taps off & refitting them with a washer to cover the hole, I'd get the silicon mastic out.
