Cooker Hood problem

I have a Tamaya Elicia 1000m Cooker Hood/extractor fan.
It has never worked since installation and the kitchen fitter "did a runner" before I could sort it out. Although the fan is rotating, VERY little air is being extracted. I have even put a match under it and nothing happens. Even when the ducting is disconnected there is nothing happening.
Has anyone got any ideas on how to get this to work. It is supposed to be connected to an outside duct.
Cheers.

Sounds like you've answered your own question 031..........................he obviously couldn't be bothered to do the "hard" bit, and vent through the wall/roof................. :o(
Sounds like what Bob has said, have you looked outside to see if he has actually knocked a hole through the wall?

Hi, thanks for your answers. I dismantled it and there is a 6 inch pipe connected to a 4 inch pipe. This 4 inch pipes goes along the rafters in the attached garage and out to a cowled topped pipe. I can get some suction at the end of the 6 inch piping but nothing is "sucking" at the cooker head end. Does this make any sense?
Is the motor fittted into the hood or is it seperate? lots of things to consider, if it is ducted at 6" it should be 6" pipe the whole way, also the amount of bends will restrict, also flexible pipe is not as efficient as solid, and if it is quite a distance this will also affect the working of it.
hi have a look inside and see if there is a lever that is set on recirculate as some hoods have an option to recirculate or vent
you need yours to vent if so

right I'll go and dismantle it again and have a look - back soon - and thanks!!

hi Knobby, fan is definitely working because I can see the blades stopping when I turn it off (obviously can't see them going round as too fast!)
Re the match I meant the smoke didn't go upwards, so no extraction taking place.

Matt, there's no lever that I can see.

Ray, the motor is inside the cooker hood (round black object with grills either side, where you can see the baldes etc.)

Even when ducting is disconnected I can't feel any suction at all.
thanks everyone for you help
Right another thing to check is that the where the vent is, has the plate been removed?
Question Author
sorry Ray, what plate?
the ducting in the wall is visible - the hole etc. Is this what you mean?

Hi Knobby,
I have found a webiste (www.elica.co.uk/downloads.asp) showing the drawings etc. I saw a funny shaped part that I knew was in my garage. Apparently it is the part that you add two charcoal filters to each side and miss out the ducting altogether. I am going to go and see if I can get this part to fit on. If it does I shall go and buy some filters!

Hi 031jb, sometimes on the top of the hood is a circular metal plate, that has to be taken off or the steam etc can't get out of the hood.

That would be mad if he has put a;; that ducting in for nothing, good luck, Ray

let us know how it goes.

Well, the "filter holder" is on and it does have some suction now, nothing great but I put a pan of boiling water under it and some of the steam is going up. However, I'm amazed that when you put your hand under the mesh you can't feel any suction, in fact it almost feels like it's blowing air out - towards the hob. Anyway, I shall track down some filters and block up the ducting hole in the wall.
I would just like to thank you all for taking the time out to help useless people like me on your Sunday.
Cheers!
hi Iv'e just looked at the manual
have a look on page 2 and see if the part labeled 13f (it looks as though its labeled F as there is also a large f on it)is fitted and if it is,take it out as it is the recirculation baffle

Do as matt1e says, because you should be able to vent all extractor hoods to the out side good luck hope you manage to sort it out, would be so easy to do if we could be on site. thanks for looking knobby.

Hi Matt,
Sorry, for the delay in answering, was just eating my lunch.
That 13f is just the thing I have put in (it was lying about in my garage). I am going to go the recycling route and buy some charcoal filters. This model is supposed to be either ducted out or recycling. I can't get it to work ducting out, which is what I would prefer.
Ray - I'm in West Sussex - anywhere near you?
