Cutting back Larch trees.

I have some Larch trees that were up to probably a decade ago trimmed and shaped. I want to restore them to their former glory and to start by removing the growing points that in some cases have reached a height of 20 odd feet above the formerly trimmed area. The trees have in the past month sprung into life and although I cut one back seemingly successfully about 3 weeks ago I'm concerned that any cutting now may cause "bleeding" as one gets with the Birch ( I once cut back quite heavily on a mature Birch.....and it died!!)
If it makes any difference we, the trees and I are in the middle of Sweden, and I've asked around locally and have yet to get an answer.

Had a look boxtops on my return .Although the site is primarily for Bonsai growers one just needs to think on a larger scale!!!! Thanks for the link.
