Pond UV bulb information please......

Hello all.

My pond water has been cloudy for sometime now.

The filter is fine, as is the pump.

The UV bulb is still working but is it true that the power/strength of the actual UV gets weaker as it gets older, thus not killing the algae as it passes, keeping the water brown?

I have no UV filter in mine and never have had. i do however have loads of plants that keep the water naturally clear

You've hit the nail on the head, I change my UV bulbs every year. Bit expensive but worth it. Also depends on the size of your pond and the size and type of your filter. Might be worth considering 'beefing' up your filter system.

Thanks for the answers so far.....

My pond is fully calculated with the correct size UV bulb and the correct size filter box.

It has plenty plant life from Iris' to lilies including good oxygenating weed.

Just need to know if the bulb loses strength over time?

UV bulbs are really only effective for about a year, they degrade all the time and tend to be really weak after 12 months. I change mine every year.

I understand they do lose their efficacy after a while, we change our every spring.

Change the UV bulb every March. Then use the UV until the end of October then turn it off for the winter. Change the bulb again in march and switch it all back on.
