Holly plants

I have two holly plants in pots in the garden. They are both approx 10 inches with lots of leaves
I have just noticed that whilst one is very dark green the other seems to have changed to a very dark almost purple colour
Is that normal and will they be ok out over the winter

They might not be the same species of holly also one may be a female and one a male. i'd just wait until next Spring and see what happens. I've had plants that have done different things this year due to too wet and then too dry!

No they are the same species
I am just worried that one may have died

Are they in the same place ? One may be getting less light, colder winds, wetter roots or different soil, and preparing to shed leaves in response.
You can only wait until next spring for the appearance of new leaves.

When I came here two years ago the azaleas in one border were weak and almost leafless and looked as though they would die. With fresh compost dug in round the roots and hard pruning they are flourishing. This is all I can offer.

Yes they are in two pots next to each other
They have not shed any leaves at all its just the difference in colour
I have noticed that Holly is slow growing - I thought I'd have enough for this years decorations but its only grown a couple of inch since I planted it in spring
Does anyone think I need to protect it over the winter months or will it be hardy enough to survive?

I've never protected holly in the winter, but if they are in pots you could move them to a sheltered spot, especially if you are in a colder area, until they are growing strongly.

Different types of holly grow at different rates, but they all take time to get used to new conditions, and very much resent change. After the first season, growth rate should increase. Hollies can grow up to 40 feet in height, but a dwarf one would stop at about 4 ft. Mine have always preferred sun and not too much water, and once they are established have put on enough growth to fill the house in vases ! But I think you are a little optimistic about decorating with them this year :o).

I still have no idea why one has darker leaves but it may just be the plant's natural tendency.

Yes I knew deep down inside that the growth would not be enough for this year
Maybe I should bring the pots in for the winter and trim them up like a tree
Since I have posted this question I have been on eBay and bought some more holly seeds
