At the end of April I was given a beautiful Hydrangea in full bloom and with buds to follow. It is now finished flowering and I was wondering if I could plant it out into the garden. If so where would it be best to site it, would it mind a shaded area? Thanks

I have one that was just a small pot plant and now thriving well outside these past few years .
Forgot to add mine is in a shaded area.
I've got one in a shaded area and its thriving. It needs quite a bit of water though.
Mine is very happy and healthy in the shade.

80% of my flourishing hydrangeas started off as pot plants.
Our's (here in the western U.S.) is in fairly heavy shade and does well. It only gets perhaps 2-3 hours sun a day.

You didn't say what color it is... the color can be canges dependant on the fertilizer used.

I have 5 or 6 Hydrangeas and they are all in full sun, and thriving - but they need a lot of watering in this heat...I don't know that they like too much shade though, they need some sun.
Clanad's right - But I use the hydrangea colourant granules and mine go from Navy blue to pale blue to purple and lilac to pink depending on how much I use..I never used any this year and they are still all different shades.
We have a very large hydrangea in full sun it seems to thrive out there and at our last house we had one in the shade, so you should be alright wherever it is planted, make sure it is well watered before you plant it out and keep it well watered until it has established in your garden.
Remember to leave the flower heads on it as they will protect the flower buds throughout the winter months, trim them off in the spring when the leaves start to break into bud
