We want to buy a hardy climber to go round our front door. It is quite open to the elements including strong wind - is there such a beast?

Based on personal experience - clematis montana. Once we'd planted it, and it was settled, we don't do anything else to it except prune it, and keep it fixed to the shed. It's very hardy.
I would agree with boxtops - just make sure it's 'tied in' on a supporting structure. Be warned though - it will run riot !
