I have a clematis that grows over our front door. This year due to house painting I had to cut it back early. It had stopped flowering and some of the leaves were turning brown. However it is decided to grow again and is about 5ft again and looking very healthy. What should I do? Let is go its own way or cut it down again. Thanks.

The RHS website indicates that different varieties of clematis can fall into one of three 'pruning groups', so you really ought to find out which group applies to your particular variety.

However for Group 1 this is stated:
"For this group no regular pruning is required, but if necessary, prune immediately after flowering in mid- to late spring when the danger of frost has passed".

For Group 2:
"Prune in late winter or early spring (February) . . . "

For Group 3:
"In February or March . . .

So it would seem that you shouldn't be considering pruning until February at the earliest, so you should definitely leave it to grow for now:

I think pruning it at the wrong time may set it back a bit and you may have a lean year but it should readjust and recover.
Let it sort itself out.
