Moving Acers (Japanese Maple)

Hi
I have several Acers in my garden, both in the ground and in tubs. I am thinking of putting three of those that are in tubs into the ground but do not want them to get any bigger (being in a tub restricts root growth - they are like giant Bonsai !!). If I were to cover the rootball once removed from the tub with some sort of material before planting that won't rot (perhaps the anti weed fleece type), would this restrict root growth and would it be detrimental to the tree ? Strange question but hope somebody can advise or offer an opinion.

Seems that there is an easy solution at hand fbg, with the aid of a 'root barrier'.
Inserting one a little distance from the rootball and infilling with some soil and compost shoud do the job.
If you just google Root Barrier, you should see several products come up to look at and compare.
