I have this one in a woodland area in the garden... It's lovely but may be a a little too much height for a courtyard garden https:// www. rhs. org. uk/ plants/ details? plantid= 1155

I like all those suggestions you've had so far, specially the ferns.
I have similar conditions in my garden and a fovorite plant of mine is 'Darmera peltata' its flower heads appear before the leaves, in spring them they are followed by the large umbrella-like leaves which turn from green to all shades of amber and red come Autumn.
You won't see nothing of it in the Winter but its worth the wait, to the Spring.

I have ferns in my damp shaded side, which doesn't get the sun - and surprisingly, hypericum is doing well too. http:// en.wiki pedia.o rg/wiki /Rose_o f_Sharo n#/medi a/File: Hyperic um_caly cinum_T asmania .jpg
