With all due respect, I think 'Dogwood' (Cornus) can be taken out of the running as a contender, although it does bear many similarities.
If you look closely at a dogwood leaf, the veins/ribs of the leaves tend to branch off from the central midrib at approx 45 degrees then curve round sharply towards the tip of the leaf, rather than radiating straight out to the leaf edges.
Has this shrub been around long enough to determine if it is an evergreen or not ?
I'll be interested to hear if a crushed leaf will reveal that aromatic smell of bay.
