San Marzano Tomatoes.

Is there a " use by date " on tomato seeds and will the the ones I bought last year still grow ?. Thanks.

I Think that if only 1/2 germinate, it may be worth a try, especially if the foil pack is sealed and intact.

For the past 4/5 years I have removed the seed from fresh tomatoes. Washed them and then left them on kitchen paper to dry. After a few days I make an envelope out of kitchem paper and then just put the dried seeds in there for 6 months or so. I store them in a cupoard in my garage which is cool/cold.
When it is time to think about sowing, I will just pop them in a seed tray and very quickly I will have far too many tomato seedlings to transplant.
This proves that you dont need to have them air tight.
My biggest problem is I hate composting perfectly good tomato plants.
One more thing that I learnt last year as I went for quality rather than quantity. You must get some seed for a tomato called Sweet Aperittif along with Sungold.
These 2 are totaly amazing for taste and by far beat anything else I have grown... and next year you will have 1000s of seeds for free.

Hello again al, Once again thanks for the info, I should have put some of my san marzano tomato seeds away for this season but I never thought of that but I will order some "sweet aperittif" & some "sungold" seeds and give them a go. Thanks Alavahalf & Chipchopper.

Having been more then pleased with my previous years results, I can not recommend these two enough. Last year I had a visitor to my polytunnel, he has spent a lifetime avoiding tomatoes (supermarket ones) as he thought they were tasteless. He was eating my toms one after the other, he has now got himself a tunnel and will be growing his own this year.
The new season soon flies around and it's all about to start again. Put 300 onions in today along with the first potatoes? .. ( all in the tunnel)..
