Our front lawn went almost completely brown in the summer. It's revived during the winter but is covered in all sorts of weeds, what is the best way of getting rid of these and when is the best time to do it. Thanks for any help.

Apply a lawn feed that contains weedkiller. Best time? Read the instructions on the bag, but it will probably say apply it in early spring.
Scarification and aeration with a weed and feed.

This should be done 2-4 times a year.
Various options available.
1. If youve got dandelions they can be removed mechanically, various tools available.
2. Apply a weed killer.

When weeds have been removed reseed. Mix seed with some compost and apply plenty birds love it. Cover with some mesh if you can and keep moist with regular mist spraying.
Alternatively returf.
Or ultimate solution put some artificial grass down, no more maintenance, just the occasional vacuum.

Thanks I assume this should be done before mowing. Should I dig up the biggest weeds in advance of the weed and feed?

Sorry Tony our posts crossed. I'd love to put artificial turf down but price may be prohibitive
Margo yes definitely before mowing you need maximum leaf for good absorbion. Weeds like dandelions are very deep rooted, so difficult to remove without specialist tools, and if it's a one off not worth the expense.
As I said artificial grass is the ultimate (can be more expensive than household carpet) but it's a one off cost and should last a long time.
As for me, I have no grass at all, all 10mm gravel and pots, that's another alternative maybe?
scarify..put down a weed and feed..dandelions are best prising out.. depends where you live as to when..up here a tad too early yet..then apply a top dressing of seed and fine sand in the bare bits left, after raking up the bits to be seeded ...water and wait...
nb..wait a week or two to do the last bit !!
Its a shame to kill dandelions, their flowers are an early feed for the bees
Woofgang as the saying goes " a weed is just a flower in the wrong place"
I agree that re-sowing with grass seed is probably your best option and cost effective too.
Try to choose a grass seed variety that would suit the situation ie shade tolerant, hard wearing etc.
