Electric Mower Running Too Fast

I have a cordless electric lawn mower, which was working fine when I put it away last time I used it. this time however, the forward speed was running way too high and the speed adjustment leaver didn't make any différance what setting it was on.

Anyone have a probable cause and way to fix it ?

If the lever doesn't make any difference, presumably the cable (or whatever) has become detached somehow somewhere.
