fallen wall with trelis...help

With the recent gales and winds, like a lot of peoples, fences and walls have fallen down.
I own semi detached home. Between my neighbour and I there is a wall (approx 2.5ft high) with treslis. His plants are along the treslis and my extension is not build on it, but a good foot away. This wall with treslis runs all the way down the garden. Withthe recent gales this wall and treslis fell. Neghbour came to us and ssaid what are we going to do. I understand that looking out from your kitchen the fencing on your right is your reponsibility, but not left. Where this is a wall with trelis who is responsible, I would think it would be him as the wall and trelis is on his right. Can some one plese advise?
I dont have title deeds as I am still paying mortgage.

You need to check your deeds (or ask someone in the street that has paid their mortgage and got them ).
I have moved house a lot and whereas what you say is sometimes correct (it was in South Yorkshire, when I lived there) Where I live at present all fences are joint responsibilty which means they are all falling down around us.
Tell him you thought it was his responsibility for starters !

I should have said you can view your deeds if held by the Building Society but they charge a fee.

yes, as sarah-louise says boundary ownership varies from area to area....where I live, as you look out from your back/ kitchen window it's the left-hand side that you are responsible for.
