How do you kill/remove a lawn

We want to remove the lawn in our front garden and then replace the whole thing with gravel.

How do you kill or remove a lawn or can you just put weed control fabric down over the lawn?

I do know someone who mowed their grass really short first, then laid membrane over it, then put shingle on top - this obviously killed the grass underneath & the end result looked fine.

Best to use perforated membrane to allow the rain & hose water to soak through.

P.S. This was only on a walking area - not for car parking.

Sorry, but to be effective, you must dig it up, treat area with weed killer, smother it from sun and rain (cause that's what makes things grow!) perhaps with old carpet, or very robust weedkilling fabric. When I did mine, I waited a year to see what came up after that, so that I could kill it first. It was a long job, but was effective, as I now have a weed-free gravelled area. Not pretty for a bit, but was worth it.

P.S. Our friend did theirs nearly two years ago & it stilll looks even & free from any weeds, etc.

Amazing after all the rain we've had, but that's down laying membrane first.

Apply herbicide containing glyphostae (Roundup) to the grass, allow a couple of days to take effect(you will not see any difference!), strim low, take off cuttings, excavate if necessary, lay weedproof membrane then at least 50mm shingle. Should do the trick then spot weed anything that pops thru.
