Recently bought a magnolia, one thin stem about 3' tall.
Can't think where to put it in the garden. Would it grow in a planter, and if so what size planter? muchas gracias

OK, I will give it a go. Thanks
If it is a Magnolia bush, a large planter would do, but keep it in a sunny spot so the roots can keep warm. If it is a magnolia tree, i would suggest putting it straight into the ground, as whilst they only grow to be small trees, it will still need a substantial root system.
