When do you cut back apple trees?

Either as soon as all the leaves have fallen, or in early spring before the blossom sets. If you do them in the autumn you might like to apply a winter tar oil wash to stop insects infecting the wounds.

Do not cut them back during the winter as the frost will get into the wounds and ruin next year's crop.

Hey, thanks for that. Will have a go around April time.
apple trees are best pruned during the winter when they are dormant. December to February is the normal time.

Thanks Hawkwalk,so maybe a better idea to do it when the leaves fall then...weather permitting...interesting article !
