if i need to start my tomato plants off in 3" pots, does this mean 3" diameter, 3" circumference or 3" depth? thankyou.

Yes, no and Yes... think about it... a 3 inch circumference peat pot would be to small to even get a finger in, much less soil and seed, no? Actually, the best place to start any seedling is an egg carton. Just fill the dimples with soil, set in a sunny place on a couple of paper towels, water every other day or so, et voila... You can then transplant them to a bigger pot, or to the outside if the weather permits...
Its just a guide really and everyone has their own way of doing things. I use plastic party cups after starting in jiffy pellets.
