Sweet peas

My wife is of the opinion that sweet peas should have the tops pinched out as they are planted on from starter pots to make them bushier. I say she should wait until they have reached the height you want them. Will someone resolve this issue please.

I brought some sweet pea seedlings and on the instructions it said to pinch the tops out after 4 sets of leaves have appeared, which I did. They have now been planted outside and are already showing signs of side shoots and they're not long enough to reach the trellis yet!
