Conventional wisdom is that root vegetables don't like growing in freshly manured soil. Could it be that fresh manure was added to one location? Or possibly contaminated bagged compost?
But it doesn't have to be just manure... carrots don't like much nitrogen, so when using a commercial fertilizer, make sure the first number of the three is small... say 5-7-10... Additionally, carrots like, no, demand even watering. If you run through a dry spell be sure to water them ... at least an inch or sl per week. (Soil with even small rocks in it will produce misshapen carrots, but since you seem to indicate these two varieties were planted in close proximity, that's probably not a factor).
By the way, was one packet of seeds an older packet, maybe stored over winter in freezing conditions... if so voila!
They still taste lovely home grown !!!
