How do I get rid of ivy.

I made a big mistake a few years ago when I planted ivy because I wanted something which grew quickly. It has grown all over the place, but especially through the privet hedge and of course I am continually pulling it away from the house, where it clings - yes like the proverbial ivy!. Any suggestions of how I can get rid of it. I have tried cutting it off at source, but I think it has rooted in other places. I don't want to kill the privets.

Be persistent. Pull out as much as poss. and spray new growth repeatedly with SBK.

I found several years ago when it was growing all over a wall was to cut it out as deep under ground as I could and then mix SBK with some old engine or diesel oil and cover it with that and then cover that with a thick black plastic bag. It worked.

Thanks a lot you two. I've got some SBK so I shall keep on with it. Will have to try and avoid the privets. The only other thing I have found as persistent is convolvulus which as I expect you gardeners already know will grow again if you leave a piece of root in the ground as small as your finger nail.

Try covering the bindweed after getting rid of as much as you can, with black bags or similar, for several months if at all possible.

No magic, during the winter - cut it back. Tease it out. On your hands and knees, yank it out from under the hedge, then as the others have said treat any new emerging shoots as they come thru next year. I' use Roundup, which will also get rid of the bindweed.

Wish it was as easy as that Hymie. It might work though, Prince Charles is reputed to talk to his plants. However in the meantime I'm going to follow all these hints and have already started by pulling out as much as I can from under the privets. And a mighty big lot it is too. Next problem is how to get rid of it. Can't burn it, can't compost it. I think it will have to be the wheelie bin.
