If you're talking about combined washer-dryers, Which? top recommended one is a Miele - but it is nearly £1100! More realistically, all of the machines made by AEG-Electrolux are Best Buys - they are good performers at a sensible price.

The gas driers are very economical.

Not for no reason are Mieles around £1100. It is because they are built better. Because of this they offer a 5 year manufacturer's warranty. Had one for 6 years now with not the slightest hint of anything wrong.

I have had a washer/dryer for years and I never use the whole function of it. It will not dry immediately after a wash. You have to wait for the wash to finish, take out 3 quarters of the clothes and then turn the drier on for it to be anywhere near dried.

AEG every time. Make sure it's German manufactured.

buildersmate: I, too, own a Miele washing-machine (not washer-dryer) which has a TEN-year warranty (parts, labour and call-out) which is excellent. It was well over 900 quid. Because a lot of people would not even consider spending that - I suggested the AEG, nearly as good but much more reasonable.

If it's any help I'm on my second Bosch washer dryer. I had the first one for at least 10 years before it died. There is a programme for a complete wash and dry. My machine gets a lot of use, I'd never buy any other brand.
I left my Bosch dishwasher when we moved house as there was already one in the new house - how I wished I'd brought my old one with us - for me it's Bosch all the way.
