I have just moved into a property that has an electric immersion heater in the hot water cylinder and is covered with a tank jacket, but it also home to a musty smell. Has anyone had this problem and what was the cure please?

Faulty electric connections can give off a very distinctive smell - often described as fishy.

Probably just stagnant air in the airing cupboard Dave. No ventilation. It will most likely go when the immersion is on and the cupboard warms up a bit.
Might be a dead mouse somewhere under the jacket. Good place to nest.
My house had been unoccupied and un-aired for several months before I bought it. It took a few weeks to get rid of the musty smell caused by a bit of damp in the plaster.
