Linking this to your earlier question about creosote in the vent pipe, what you are trying to establish is that the vent pipe remains hot enough further away from the stove such that creosote vapour does not recondense on the inner surface of the pipe before it gets out into the big wide world. So, without knowing what your specific set up is, I'd stick it close to the ceiling where the exposed pipe disappears above.
