Grrrr our Gas meter box is broken...
6 Answers
Around the time we moved into our house the Gas Board were asking householders if they wanted to have their gas meters outside the property and we agreed, The meter was fixed in a corner at the front of the house with a white box covering it. Over the years meter readers have been and the service engineers have opened the box with the key to read /check the meter. Now the lock on the box is broken, (the last person to read the meter i.e Gas Board employer) and the meter is open to the elements. I've rung the Gas Board and they say they do not supply the boxes. I pointed out that we didn;t damage the box it was their employees, they have advised us to go to B&Q or Wicks to buy one. The nice young man said they would send me a voucher for £20. I'm still waiting. Has anyone bought and fitted one of these boxes before?

You probably just need a replacement door. See here:

(Note that clicking on 'Data Sheet' provides fitting instructions).
Chris
BTW: Neither the B&Q or Wickes websites list meter boxes.

Thanks Chris, it doesn't look as though the doors will fit our box. It is at least 15 years old and perhaps we'll have to get a new box. The ones shown are quite flat whereas ours stands off the wall. Looks as though we are going to have to make do and jam the door shut until the meter reader comes.
Thanks for your help.

This is advice found for Wales and West Utilities. So ring your team and see if they can fix your box lol.
Under the Gas Act 1996, the domestic meter box is part of the fabric of the property and as such is the responsibility of the property owner/occupier to ensure it is adequately maintained. All repair/replacement work is chargeable.
Please contact the meter box team directly on 02920 278637 for an application pack. The pack contains an information letter, price list and a meter box description leaflet.
There is no charge for Hinge Pins/Locks/or keys.
