I do both, but you can't put your shredding in the recycling bin here. We compost it along with the kitchen and garden waste.

It depends what it is - shiny paper doesn't compost, newspaper and matt paper shredding is fine.

What I find annoying is that I can't put cartons in my recyc.bins.

There is a lot of confusion. For example I always clean my jars and tins and peel the labels off but I know some others who don't. And I don't recycle butter tubs and yoghurt pots but I know others do.
I We have separate bins -one for paper/card and one for glass, cans and plastic. One day the van that collects plastic, jars and tins missed my bin, but when I pointed it out the refuse collector just tipped the contents into the next van that was collecting paper. So maybe someone (or a machine) sorts through it all later anyway, although in that case why have separate bins and vans?

I agree about cartons. I keep them in the box with the glass jars and bottles. They go to the tip (recycling centre) when I go with the glass or whatever else needs disposing off as they can be recycled from there.

I find it annoying that we can't recycle yoghurt or magarine tubs yet too.

We have no facility at all (not even at the tip) for marge tubs or tetrapaks. I found a site where you could mail tetrapaks to, but the postage was £1.50. Er - no.

I'm not clear in which bin you should put tetra packs. If it's to go in the cardboard bin wouldn't I need to cut off the plastic ring (around the bit where you pour the juice out)?

Tetrapaks aren't cardboard though, they are glossy on the inside. They have to be collected separately (where they are recycled). Ours just have to go in the bin.

I'm in Cheshire East and they've just changed the recycling rules for the better. ALL recycled stuff now goes into one bin (not garden stuff). It's great. I also do a bit more by recycling jokes now and again.
