Check the phone first at the Master socket (where the main line comes in)
That is where further extensions are taken from.
If it's ok there .. they will charge you : (
Extensions are wired from inside master box .. so you need to check cable and the connection at the extension box.
You can take the face off a main box (2 front screws) .. and there is a socket behind it. This is the raw incoming line where he will check it first.
The front connects this to rest of system (wires connected behind the part you just pulled off) Check wires are attached to terminals 2, 3, 5. (3 not so important nowadays .. as it's the 'ring' line .. not needed usually with modern handsets)

Does the cable arrive at house underground .. then into the OR covered box outside door?
Is that a 'Cable' area? They are bundled together (TV/phone, if it is)
Then on newer houses, the cable goes through wall behind box and to master socket. Master socket may be the split type or have a BT logo on it.
