Hi all. I'm looking to buy a complete new bed and want a memoryfoam type mattress. There are a few different makes & types. Anyone got any advice regarding how thick it should be etc TIA
From personal experience I have found that a good quality pocket sprung mattress with a top layer of memory foam about 50mm thick is the best option.
That way you get the benefit of the sprung mattress and can have it set to how soft or firm you prefer as well as getting the added benefit of the top layer moulding around your body shape.
I have just had fusion surgery on the lower four vertebrae in my back and have had no problems getting a comfortable position on my mattress which is made up as above.
Spent the best part of four weekend's going around trying different types and makes of mattress before settling for the one we did. It is important to remember that we spend nearly a third of our lives in bed but people spend minutes choosing a mattress but months finding their perfect car which they are in for less than a hundredth of their lives.
Expect to pay in the region of £400 - £700 to get a decent mattress that is going to give you proper support and comfort!
Because Mr LL doesn't like memory foam mattresses - they make his back ache?? - we compromised. We have a new good sprung mattress and, like postdog, a silentnight memory foam topper. We have an oak bed with slats like Woofgang. Both of us are now sleeping very comfortably.
I bought myself a Tempur pillow but it feels like a brick and makes my neck hurt, so it was a bad investment.
Oh obviously househusband has the same set up too. I have back problems as well as arthritis and find our set up extremely comfortable. Our mattress was about £500.00 and is on the firm side.
Your post wasn't there Househusband before I started my answer!!
I found the same with the full memory foam mattress lofty, I had one on a weeks trial and got the company to collect it after two nights as it was causing all sorts of problems with my back. The wife slept downstairs on the couch after the first night!!
Have not tried the pillows but from your quote I think I will stick to the Down filled pillows we have that mould nicely and support where needed.
The only mattress I have ever truly loved was a waterbed. Alas, it kept springing tiny little leaks, just pinholes round the corners, that were hard work to clean up because you had to lift this enormous bag of water out of the way - it could take an hour or more So I reluctantly had to get rid of it. But it gave me the best sleep I've ever had.
My sister and her boyfriend kindly got my Dad to buy a very thick memory foam mattress for MY bed. I find it overbearingly hot even with a thin tog quilt. I don't know if the same is true for thinner ones though.
I can't stand being hot in bed either, Lottie. I dread my Dad walking in when I'm half naked, lying on top of the bed. I fear his poor old heart may not stand the strain!
Lottie, you old raver you.
I have heard that some people can find them very hot. Also I have heard that it can be difficult to move around if you sink into the mattress.
I've got a bog standard mattress that was going a bit dippy. I bought a cheap 2" memory foam topper online (about £30) and it is brilliant - so cosy and comfortable and definitely warm but then I like being hot in bed(!) You really feel like snuggling into it.
Thanks for your answers. I'll bear them in mind. Ive been trying a few memoryfoam mattresses and prefer the ones on the softer side, 1-2 on scale of 5 I think. I like being toasty in bed but other half prefers it a little cooler so will see.
