heating oil.

I filled up my oil tank back in June so reckon there is about £5/600 's worth of fuel in it. Haven't had it on yet. I've just been asked by a friend to take over her cottage (probably moving in 1st week in Jan) anyone know if there is anyway I can realise back my outlay? It's a rented property and I guess the new tenants could just say 'toughies, we don't want to buy it'. I realise they will have to have oil but when push comes to shove, I can't make them buy it. Any suggestions welcomed!

You can try your supplier but I don't reckon they will want to know. Too much hassle - they can't sell it to someone else unless taken back to the depot and retested. How do they know otherwise the customer hasn't inadvertently tampered with it. So a special tanker is going to have to come out to pick it up.

... it's your oil (you bought it) so if they use it then they should pay you.
They can obviously say 'no thanks' but you could presumably then lock off the supply to prevent them 'stealing' it. But that would need the agreement of the landlord ... tricky.
The easy solution is offering it to them at a reasonably significant discount (so everybody wins something), but this might only work only if they thought there was a real possibility that you would leave them with an empty tank if they don't agree.
If you are anywhere near a farming area, just ask around in the pub. We sold our final half tankful (and the tank!) to a local farmer at the point where we got mains gas. They always need oil & usually have the machinery to collect it.

agree cath, hence the thread but regretably what Should happen isn't necessarily what Will happen. Decent folk would buy it off me (happy to let it go at a reduced rate) - was just trying to find out if anyone on AB had had any experience with this sort of thing. If I was moving in I'd buy it off you and I suspect most peeps would - after all, they'd have to fill the tank anyway (and have to pay) so hopefully they'll see it as a bonus that you've saved them the job. Rather nasty of them if they don't, I reckon.
