Hotpoint Ultima Washing machine

I have a Hotpoint Ultima washing machine and the top display light has gone out. I have traced the part No. required but befor ordering I wanted to check the part was correct. However I was stymied at the first attempt! I can`t even get the lid off! I found two screws at the the rear top of the machine and after removal, found I could not move the top either back or forwards to remove it. is the display accessible from the top removal or is it at the front? If either how does one get to it please?

Give the front corners of the top cover a good, firm smack with the palms of your hands, it will slide backwards but they need a little persuasion.
