Should the avocado stone be covered and how often do you water the compost it is in?

keep the compost damp. my experience is that if you cover them about an inch. leave half the stone uncovered or anything in the middle, the stone will still grow!

This website offers the following advice:

Place the avocado stone in a pot of compost with the pointed end sticking out from the soil.

Water the compost and then seal the pot in a plastic bag.

Put the pot on a windowsill.

Remove the bag when the leaves begin to appear.

How odd - I was taken into someone's house today to be shown an avocado plant!  He puts his in sideways (says that's how thay land on the earth!), pressed into the compost but not covered.  He then keeps the stone and compost gently watered until he can see a tiny shoot coming out of the stone.  Aften that, he just keeps the compost moist and keeps a little water in the saucer the pot is sitting on.  He had four growing like this so something is right!

after a few unsuccessful attempts at growing an avocado a colleague suggested suspending the stone above a container of water so i am currently trying this tactic to get the beggar to grow perhaps if all else fails you could try this
