Growing Avocados!

I never thought they would grow but they have! I’ve grown quite a few avocado plants straight from the stone - they are each about a foot high now. I’ve obviously brought them indoors for the winter and they are on a windowsill in spare room, but it’s quite a cold room, and obviously there isn’t any sunshine outside to reflect in. Any ideas how to keep them to survive winter?? As I’ve spent so many months growing them I’d hate to lose them now. Cover them?? Feed them? TIA.

I'd keep it in a not too warm room. Not unheated though. No fertiliser in winter.

Ok...just googled...

I've never had any luck with growing avocado seeds -which method did you use?

Thanks Pasta x
Polly, I got bought a kit but it was just basically what looks like a little plastic boat with a hole in the middle to put the stone. Then you put about an inch of water in a bowl and ‘float’ the boat with the stone in. But I’ve now done them without so you basically put the stone in water until it splits, and the shoot will grow out from the split in the stone. Then when it’s about an inch high I plant in a flowerpot with soil.
I tried the water method but the stone just went mouldy. I will have another go as they make a nice pot plant.
I grew an avocado plant from a stone several years ago. It grew to about 3’ high, with leaves 14” long. I just left the stone soaking for a few weeks, then put it in a plant pot with some compost.
what a coincidence, i´ve been trying to grow avocado plants from the stones for about 3 weeks, and i havent seen anything yet. So how long should i have to wait?
It takes ages to see roots/growth. A month or so I guess.
I always have done the 3 toothpick method. You push 3 toothpicks regularly spaced at the seeds midpoint. Suspend in a glass of water and put in a bright, warm place. Change the water every 7 to 10 days.
I've not done it in ages...I should as I eat them at least 3 times a week.
I read the title as "Growling Avocados". I'm disappointed that I misread it, but I think I've found a great name for a punk band.

Love that Mozz lol. I could start a new hobby!!
We used to stick 3 wooden cocktail sticks in the equator of the stone & suspend it from the rim of a glass so the bottom half was in water. The skin breaks & the white roots emerge, when there are enough it can be potted on.
Not sure if your avocados will bear fruit. Think you need male and female trees
Easily done, Mozz, especially when the phrase 'bear fruit' pops up.
