Our 4ft fish tank split and deposited 40gals of water onto the front room carpet - saved the fish, but the carpet is smelling now. It has almost dried out.
Any tips on removing the smell?

Thanks in advance

Try sprinkling Bi carbonate soda on it and leave over night also cut an onion in half and leave that also over night ( they absorb smells ).
Get a professional carpet cleaning company it to shampoo it and dry it out.
Thinking about this , the water will have got under the carpet and into the floor. Is the floor wood ? if so the wood will have got wet and will need to be dried out. You may have to take up the carpet and dry the floor and the underlay first then put it all back and shampoo the carpet.

The floor is concrete
This happened to us and we ended up claiming on our house insurance and getting new carpet because it was totally ruined.
this is not just water on the carpet - its old fish food, fish poo, chemicals, etc etc

this carpet will be riddled with bacteria, and beginning to go mouldy and rancid - and the smell wont go

you need to hire a wet vac, to suck up the remaining water and clean away the bacteria
